Kate Adoo Adeku (Ghana)

Good human relations, that are a very important aspect of the African culture, have made Kate one of the most distinguished in her field of operation.

Since she was 12 year old, Kate Adoo Adeku took several actions with the intention of changing the situation of her sisters in rural and urban communities for a better quality of life. She has trained trainers for the national literacy programme in the ten regions of Ghana and has coordinated a basic education program for communities. This means that women and men, who received training in reading and writing as well as in managing finances, are now less vulnerable to poverty. Because of this her name resonates in many communities and women say that thanks to Kate Adeku they feel more confident. Her training for adults crosses all sections of society – from workers in the informal sector to doctors. Her work at the Institute of Adult Education has influenced other institutions in the sub-region. This is especially the case with her distance learning courses on HIV/AIDS prevention which has raised interest as far as South Africa.
