Born in 1963 in Muscat, Oman, Tiba Mohammad Rashed Al Maoli obtained a BA in Arabic and Literature from Beirut University in 1992. She is the first Omani woman to be nominated for the Omani Legislative Council, and has helped to found a womens association that works to educate women in the Seeb area, just outside Muscat. Tiba is known for her commitment to the betterment of her community by advocating justice and equality. But on 13th July 2005 Tiba Al Maoli was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment by a Lower Court in Muscat in connection with her criticisms of the government.
Tiba Al Maoli is a communications specialist and journalist and has published short stories and poems both in the Omani and Arab press. She began working as an intermediate schoolteacher in 1983, before becoming a broadcaster and program producer in 1986. In 1996 she became a member of the board of directors of the Muscat Association for Childcare and Mentally Disabled Children. In the same year, she was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Omani Women’s Association. Since 1994, she has been a member of the Oman Legislative Council for two terms, a position that facilitated her advocacy for free elections. She participated with other members of the Legislative Council in drafting two significant laws in Oman: Silk Alqadi Law and Al Ahwal Al Shakhseyya Law. She has worked to develop cultural, economic and artistic programs and has lectured extensively on gender, politics and pedagogy.
