Freelance researcher Aloka Talukder & her happy family

My first marriage took place in March, 1999; every sort of violence was present in that marriage. I was beaten up severely and abused emotionally, every single day. The whole pregnancy period was a nightmare for me. My education came to a halt. I was devastated. As far I can remember, I started to protest during the third trimester of my pregnancy. One day when he tried to slap me, I slapped him with all my strength. I told him, “NOT ANYMORE! FROM NOW ON WHENEVER YOU THINK OF BEATING ME, KEEP IN MIND THAT I WILL DO THE SAME TO YOU.”

Today whenever I think of my past I feel relieved that I did not make too late to decide to quit the insulting relationship. If I could not make the decision I would not be able to continue my study, I would not be able to continue my life with self-respect. I only passed S.S.C. when I got married. I was supposed to sit for my H.S.C. in 2000 but I could not do so until 2002 due to the disturbing developments. Later I took admission in Jahangirnagar University and completed Masters in Anthropology. I got the opportunity to pursue my career in research. I also found my soul-mate who in real sense respects our relationship and nurtures my hopes, ideas and dreams.
