Education is one of the foundations of society. Through education, everyone can understand the importance of peace and equality.
Ho Wai Man is a young “educators” who spare no effort to teach the generation.
She is a third-year psychology student at Lingnan University, minoring in sociology. From high school to now, she has made different efforts for equal education. In high school, she began tutoring children in “Small Group Home”. During the summer in the first year in University, she joined AIESEC’s volunteer service program, being tutor in Vietnam. She joined AIESEC in the coming semester, she hope to promote AIESEC’s volunteer service program to more Lingnan students.
In the first semester in year three, Ho Wai Man took half a gap year to work as an intern in Jumpstart at University of California, Los Angeles. She was responsible for training local college students to teach children how to learn English. When she first arrived there, she began to read the story. She analyzed how to express the stories in interesting ways, so that children would like to read the stories. Thus, she designed different way to make children like to read those stories. After that, she would then teach college students how to apply these methods. Later, she began to plan training workshops in order to re-integrate her native culture into local culture. She taught college students how to manage students with different races in the classroom. For example, she wanted them to think about whether the teaching materials showed race discrimination, so that students with different races did not have hard feelings. From being a volunteering tutor to training volunteers, Ho Wai Man has spared no effort to equal education.
After returning to Hong Kong, Ho Wai Man becomes the community service secretary at the Jockey Club Scholars Alumnis Association, responsible for planning and coordinating different service projects. Still now, she continued to promote equal education. For example, she organized a workshop on career counseling for secondary students coming from “Pincipal Chan Free Tutorial World”.
Ho Wai Man stated that education is the foundation of all problems. “We can only make use of “Education” to make information transform into knowledge.” Therefore, she will continue to focus on promoting equality in education. In the future, she also plans to combine what she learnt in her major study like engaging in mental health work. After participating in numerous volunteer work, she reflects that doing volunteer work should not be a top-down approach but should cooperate with others instead.
