Chung, Chi Yung(1920-2014)

Dr. Chung was born in Changsha, Hunan in 1920. She was graduated with the highest score from the Law school and she became the first female judge in Chinese history. Later she got married with Mr. Hu Hong Lie, she went to Europe and studied the master degree in Paris. She was professional and also passionate in studying teenager crime issues and understood how British educational system manage and educate teenagers. In 1955 she followed her husband and immigrated to Hong Kong. They opened a law firm and had a significant saving.
In the 70s when Hong Kong boosted the economy, government did not distribute much resources on education aspect. Many students were unable to get school places or they needed to pay a lot fee to study. Plus witnessed how China cultural revolution made serious Education destruction, Chung couples decided to spend their saving in establishing Hong Kong Shue Yan College, which the total saving they spent was estimated up to 400-500million dollars, including a few times of selling their assets.
Few times refusing to cooperate with government senseless policies, Dr. Chung run the college without receiving any sponsors. Nevertheless, Chung couple’ sacrificing spirit was honored by the government. Hong Kong Shue Yan College was able to upgrade to private universities. And during these 40 years, many Shue Yan graduates made significant contributions to society.
