Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu (Viet Nam)

“We should examine and modify our policies to make them suitable for the country’s development and international integration.”

Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu (born 1943) has served as a deputy in Vietnam’s National Assembly for six consecutive terms, from 1976 to the present. As a member of the Assembly’s Standing Committee and chairperson of the Commission on Social Affairs, she monitors the implementation of laws at grassroots level and carries the petitions of the people on burning issues to the National Assembly, which is responsible for drawing up suitable policies for practical life.

The members of Vietnam’s National Assembly are familiar with Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu, who speaks in a soft voice about burning societal issues. As chair of the National Assembly’s Commission on Social Affairs, she presents the people’s problems with convincing analyses of reality and root causes, so that the members of the National Assembly understand the problems clearly, and draw up the appropriate policies. In this way, she has made a great contribution to dealing with the government’s limitations and improving policies to protect laborers and secure the welfare of ordinary people. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu was working for the Youth’s Union when she was nominated to stand for election as a deputy in the National Assembly. In the Commission on Social Affairs, she supervises the implementation of policies on health, health care, and the prevention of social problems such as drugs, prostitution, and HIV/Aids. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu also works on policies for labor, employment, wages, insurance, disabled people, orphaned children, migration, population, family, gender, religion, hunger eradication, and poverty alleviation. The government has modified and supplemented its policies as a result of her interventions and influence. Her presentations at the National Assembly, in public forums and in national and international conferences and seminars have raised awareness and changed behavior in society and promoted change and development in a constructive and peaceful manner. Having experienced the Vietnam War, she understands the costs of armed conflict and holds that nothing is more precious than peace, which is why she tries her best to listen to the people and serve their needs. In this way, Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu helps create peace, stability and development for the people of Vietnam and the world.
