Cheng Lai-yung is a female security guard, working at Lingnan University. She has been working there for five years. Being passionate and responsible, she has improved the environment by safeguarding the peace and building good relationships with students, as well as teachers.
As what Yung said, she had only one duty, which was ‘keeping her eyes on everything in the surrounding’. In fact, she has a lot of routine work, but she can handle it in an efficient way. Her response is always immediate, as long as she is able to fix it. To her, being responsible, which is an essential quality of being a professional security guard, is the most important thing in her work. She keeps alert anytime at work in order to maintain the security of the building.
Yung also enjoys building relationships with the people. She regards students as her customers and children, hence taking good care of them. As she had done business before became a security guard, she gained the experience of getting along with different people. Now, therefore, she can apply this skill to keep good relationships in her workplace, such as preventing unnecessary conflicts. Moreover, she takes an active role in making friends with students and teachers, regardless of their nationalities. Being curious, she often asked foreigners to teach her their own languages, such as English and Korean. She has successfully broken down the barrier of language. At the same time, she is willing to develop deeper relationships with local students, such as chatting about their homework and daily life, concerning their physical conditions etc., as if she was their mother.
Although Yung’s contributions seem to be insignificant, it is still very important to the society. When she took a step forward, the community became more peaceful and friendly. It is a reminder to us that every single step can make a difference.
